Unfortunately for Ikta, the Katjvarna Empire’s war with the Republic of Kioka destroys his lifestyle. As a military officer, Ikta joins the army as a friend of his childhood friend, Yatorishino Igsem, which is one of three things he hates. Heroism and noblesse oblige are the other two.
Ikta and Yatorishino meet other candidates on a boat headed to the military exam site, Matthew Tetojirichi, Torway Remion, and Haroma Becker. In an unfortunate turn of events, the boat sinks during a storm, ending up in enemy territory. The team also finds that Princess Chamille Kitora Katjvanmaninik is being held captive.
They are rewarded for rescuing the Katjvarnan heir by becoming Imperial Knights after they work together. It is thus that Ikta begins to live the life of two things that he hates, that of a military officer and that of a hero.
